a breath of fresh air in Lemmer

all the ingredients for a day out in Lemmer

Fancy heading out in autumn? Lemmer is a good option. The beach, the rich history, the heated patio cafés of what was once only a 'Settlement', and these tips are the ingredients for a breath of fresh air in Waterland van Friesland.

Blowing away cobwebs on Lemmer beach

Are you up for it? What could be healthier than a refreshing dive into the IJsselmeer lake, and Lemmer beach is the ideal location. And afterwards, sit back and relax in the comfortable cushions of the wooden benches at Beachclub Lemmer. With first row seats and views of the former Zuiderzee, enjoy a warming mug of coffee or hot chocolate. You really should try the home-made cheesecake!

Stories of Lemmer

In olden days, it was trade that truly made Lemmer flourish, even more than the fishing industry. Wandering around the streets full of monumental buildings, much of the history of its origins is still apparent. Yet there are also clear signs of the fishing past. In the historic narrow street named Leeg, for example, where four houses stand together with a shared open cellar. This is where the enormous fishing nets were hung to dry. They were simply so long that they would never have fitted in a single cellar. When booking a tour of Lemmer via the VVV Tourist Information, you'll be transported back to the days of old.

Turn around the Dock

Together, the streets named Kortestreek and Langestreek form the town centre on each side of the Dock. This is where you can moor your boat in the centre of Lemmer. When the residents refer to 'turning around the Dock', they're simply saying that they'll be visiting the centre. Sit for a while on a bench shaped like the bows of a Lemmer-style fishing boat, and try to imagine life on the water. The waterside restaurants will welcome you to join them for dinner, with heated patios and blankets provided on the chairs. The hard part will be which one to choose.

Lemmer sluice gates

Why not find yourself a bench at Lemmer sluice gates and enjoy all the boats heading into Lemmer or back out again through the sluices into open water. The two characteristic buildings next to the sluice are certainly worth a visit. Don't forget to check out the tiles with proverbs on their façades.

“On heading home from Lemmer after a very satisfying evening meal, you'll know for sure that Lemmer should be on the list for a repeat visit!”
